An ever-young school in a photographer’s eyes
Opening Li Deli’s old album, we enter the old architecture in the campus that we have ignored. It is the old architecture that bears a culture of hundred years and witnesses the splendid course of Hubei Province.
Li Deli is a nostalgic man, who, always with a camera on his back, enters old schools one after another and traces the history of them through the mottled stains on the walls. Architects like to say that architecture is solidified music. The old buildings with green glazed tiles in the campus of Wuhan University coexist harmoniously with hills and lakes, striking up a lyric piece with the theme of harmony of man with nature. The theory that man is an integrated part of the nature is what Chinese culture pursues, which is realized in the campus of Wuhan University.
Actually in Hubei Province, there are many such old buildings in old schools which are either still in use or just for exhibition. Li Deli believes those schools still survive and develop because “education is for men rather than men are for education.’
The memory of Wuhan Sports Institute
Among the newly-built blocks, the old buildings seem to be a little odd.
The mark of Tianjin Lu Middle School
The present Tianjin Lu Middle School is developed from “Zhongzheng Primary School” before
the Liberation of China. It is said that the primary school was named after then Chinese President
Jiang Jieshi.
China University of Politics
The old buildings in the campus of China University of Politics hide themselves inconspicuously
in this metropolis.
The preexistence of Cangbu Middle School
Compared with schools of cement buildings, Cangbu Middle School’s bright red designs remind
people of the old days of education.
Different Survival of the schools
The old schools in the modern city are like old illustrations in books, giving people complicated
feelings. It is improper to say those old schools are historic sites because they are still alive. Even
on a coldest wintry day, there is still sunlight in their classrooms.
