Venus Crew
MCG和FICE是NEW SCHOOL新风格的,JER是OLD SCHOOL旧风格的,DAL擅长3D立体,FOX专注背景。

JEJ consists of five students from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts. Three of them learn environmental art, and two learn sculpture. They have fantastic English names and their titles are designers. They won a great reputation for their spray painted graffiti. When I saw JEJ for the first time, I could not associate the bold and flowing style with these shy young people. But when we chatted, I found that as the representative of the new Chinese generation, their passion, creation, love of adventure and fashion was fully displayed in Jazzy music.
What is it that makes you hold the Crazy graffiti exhibition?
Thanks to the support of Mei Lian Art Space, we held Crazy graffiti exhibition. Crazy are our experience and achievements in graffiti works and it is also a summary of what we have done. We want to let people know more about graffiti. The works displayed on the exhibition are not only the traditional graffiti works: we also try to show the charm of graffiti through shelf-art.
Why do you call yourselves designers?
(Laugh) We hope that we can melt the feelings and forms of graffiti into our creation. We not only can make graffiti works on walls and there are many other forms like painting, plane design, picture etc. We hope to create a new environment to tell our stories. Of course, we haven’t come up with a good title yet. At present, we use designer to indicate our status.
What is your style?
It is no more than 10 years since graffiti came to China. Chinese graffiti artists are trying to find out experience. Fortunately, Chinese writers can consult foreign works which have grown mature. But we don’t want to imitate. We try to create Chinese style graffiti works. For example, some of our works use the buildings in the south of the Yangtze River as the background and the strong contrast created by exaggerate and deformed letters etc. Our ideal is to create Chinese style graffiti works.
What are your characteristics?
MCG and FICE are old school style, JER is old school style. DAL is good at 3D soild, FOX focuses on background. Each of us has his own characteristics. Our creation combines all the characteristics.
How do you divide your work?
First we draw the script together. FOX is responsible for the background. Then we discuss about how to harmonize the deformed letters in different style into a whole. Finally, we spray paint on the wall.
Where do you do graffiti?
Streets are the best for graffiti. There are many walls outside Hubei Institute of Fine Arts. We choose to do graffiti there. And we also do graffiti on railways and the riverside of Wuchang.
What is your biggest difficulty?
Money. Graffiti is rather expensive. A tin of paint costs 6-7 yuan. A piece of work needs more than 50 tins. We often have two meals a day to save money for graffiti. Secondly atmosphere. Graffiti works are rarely found in China, even in such big cities as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Hong Kong. It would be better if the graffiti atmosphere develops as well as in America and Europe.
Why do you like graffiti?
I will tell you something funny. Once MCG and DAL sprayed on a train under the second Yangtze River Bridge and they were found. They escaped but found that they left their paint on the scene. So they hided themselves and picked the paint several hours later. Graffiti drifts between modern art, pop art and street art. It features strong forms. It is very exciting as you spray the paint. And you have a strong sense of achievement when the work is finished. What is your biggest wish? We hope more businessmen will find us to conduct activities so that more people know graffiti.
